Heart Over Highlights: The 10 Intangibles That Define Great Players
By Lynn Milligan | June 24, 2026
Happy Summer!!
This is a great time for individual development both on and off the court. But what tends to happen is many players tend to worry just about the points they score and exposure events. There are some important things to focus on as well. They are the intangible characteristics that will tell and show coaches more about you than how many points you score. AND they are not just about basketball but real life!
They will show what you stand for, what your expectations of yourself are, and what is important to you. The one thing that all of these characteristics have in common is they all take absolutely NO TALENT, JUST PRIDE and YOUR HEART N SOUL.
- Be EARLY. On time is late.
- Work Ethic. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.
- EFFORT. Empty your tank.
- Body Language. Speaks loudly.
- Energy. Bring it. Be the communicator, the voice.
- Attitude. Positive vibes.
- Passion. Love the game.
- Being Coachable. Listen, learn, eye contact, respect.
- Doing Extra. Be the one who high fives, sprints on and off the floor, is connected to all of your teammates, looks your coach in the eye, and is a GREAT teammate.
- Being Prepared. Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready. Watch and learn. Take care of your body, rest and recovery and nutrition are all important.
I will break down what Heart and Soul means for you in my next blog. Stay tuned. In the meantime, if you need help understanding or explaining these talents to your team, daughter, or son, just reach out and set up a call at coachmilliganastepahead.com.
